Perhaps you have come across a product called a LED filament bulb while wandering in an electronics store or browsing through e-shop offers. And you may have been a little confused because this type of lamp is never mentioned in the bulb reviews. The following lines will give you an explanation.
LED Filament bulb = Edison bulb for the 21st century
The filament bulb is a relatively new, designer type of LED bulb. Often this special subcategory of LED bulbs is called the "Edison bulb for the 21st century". In appearance and design, they really do look like classic tungsten bulbs.
Inside the glass bulb you will find series-connected diodes that are indistinguishable from filaments at first glance. Some models even have the bulb coloured in amber shades, which gives the light emitted by them an extremely pleasant tinge of yellow to the human eye. The kind of light we have associated with the classic warm and comforting light bulb since childhood.
Features of the LED filament bulb
Most importantly - despite all this retro look and design, filament bulbs have all the features of LED bulbs.
Thus, they also offer the following benefits:
- High lifetime (up to 25,000 hours),
- energy saving (up to 80% energy savings),
- they are available in different shapes,
- resistance to frequent switching,
- fast light onset,
- environmentally friendly,
- wide range of colour temperatures,
- good colour rendering.
How does a LED filament bulb work?
The term LED filament, after which this type of LED bulb is named, generally represents a long filament with a specific function. In the case of a filament bulb, it is a strip of glass or sapphire, several centimetres long, which is wrapped in a layer of phosphor and carries the LEDs.
In addition, LED filaments function in the same way as LED bulbs. They are therefore suitable for traditional crystal chandeliers, modern pendant lights and table lamps.
All the electronic components are then "hidden" in the socket, so that only the filament is visible in the bulb, which looks really stylish.
What do you think?
Why did the LED filament bulb come about?
The LED filament bulb was created as a kind of LED bulb 2.0. The first wave of LED technology came at a time when we - the customers - were primarily looking for more economical and environmentally friendly, yet more intense lighting fixtures. And the possibility of colour changes was just a nice bonus.
The design aspect therefore played no role. Of course, this is no longer the case. Nowadays, for many of us, an energy-saving and colour-changing bulb is no longer enough - we want something more. We want the light emitted and the bulb itself to be attractive and pleasing to the eye. And LED filament bulbs clearly do that.
