How to Illuminate History? Crystal Chandeliers in Castles and Châteaux

Added 11.3.2025 13:32.35

The Czech Republic is home to one of the highest concentrations of historical monuments in the world. Thanks to its location at the crossroads of European cultures and its rich history, the country boasts numerous castles and châteaux, each telling stories of past centuries. More than 2,000 protected castles and châteaux have been preserved through meticulous restoration, careful maintenance, and a commitment to safeguarding their unique charm for future generations.

Castles Where Light Tells a Story

One of the oldest preserved châteaux in the Czech Republic is Velké Losiny, with its Renaissance design dating back to the 16th century. Unlike many other châteaux, it has remained untouched by modern renovations, meaning electricity was never introduced into its interiors. Visitors can admire a painted ceiling that creates the illusion of a starry sky, from which hang intricately carved and silver-plated wooden chandeliers from northern Italy still illuminated solely by candlelight.

Most Czech châteaux, however, were electrified at the beginning of the 20th century, allowing their historic interiors to shine in the best possible light today. For example, at Děčín Château (CZ), a magnificent crystal chandelier from ArtCrystal Tomeš welcomes visitors at the ticket counter, setting the tone for an elegant experience before they even step into the historic halls. This château has hosted many notable figures, including Fryderyk Chopin, who composed his famous Děčín Waltz here in 1835. And if you're seeking a truly enchanting setting, don't miss the Rose Garden - once a private retreat for nobility, now one of the most romantic spots in northern Bohemia.

Castles in a New Light

In recent decades, many Czech châteaux have transitioned into private ownership, allowing them to find new life and purpose. This shift is often driven by the high costs of upkeep and restoration, which municipalities and the state could not always afford. New owners frequently invest significant resources into restoring these historical landmarks, saving them from decay while repurposing them as luxury hotels, cultural centers, or private residences.

Our mission is to bring light into historic interiors with respect for their uniqueness. Working closely with architects, restorers, and château owners, we design lighting that seamlessly harmonizes with the character of these spaces. From the initial concept to final installation, we ensure that our lighting solutions enhance historical beauty and preserve the authentic atmosphere.

One stunning example of sensitive restoration is Château Šanov (CZ), which has been transformed into a five-star hotel. Here, we designed lighting that highlights the elegance of the restaurant, lobby bar, and grand corridors.

Similarly, an 18th-century private château near Plzeň (CZ) underwent an impressive transformation, now featuring an exquisite collection of crystal lighting from ArtCrystal Tomeš. In collaboration with the owners and interior designers, we created a true masterpiece. Carefully selected crystal chandeliers enhance every room, from reception halls to bathrooms, while the private quarters glow under the timeless elegance of Marie Theresa chandeliers. At another private château near Jičín (CZ), we installed 36 crystal light fixtures, blending historical grandeur with modern luxury. From a majestic dining room chandelier and an elegant kitchen pendant to intricately designed bedside lamps and brass sconces lining the vaulted hallways, each light brings a sense of refinement to the interiors.

Our work extends beyond borders - at the Prince's Palace in Żagań, Poland, a Baroque jewel from the 13th century surrounded by an English park, we installed crystal chandeliers and wall sconces crafted in authentic historical designs.

Another example is Śliwniki Château in Poland, which, after years of neglect, has been beautifully restored. The focal point of its grand hall is a Marie Theresa chandelier, an imposing 2.5-meter-tall fixture weighing 400 kg and featuring 72 light bulbs. Its installation took two days, but the result is breathtaking—this shimmering chandelier has become the true crown jewel of the château.
